More than 60% of American adults are now overweight or obese, and the prevalence of obesity is increasing in both adults and children. The American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) states "OBESITY is quickly overtaking TOBACCO as the leading preventable cause of cancer." Obesity is often accompanied by life-threatening complications, including type II diabetes, heart disease, and cancer. These complications are referred to as “metabolic syndrome”, and pose a major challenge to public health. Obesity is a risk factor for the development of breast cancer, and disease prognosis is worsened if the patient is obese at the time of diagnosis.
