Supplements
Gout through
Inflammatory Bowel Disease
Gout
*ProtoSorb C 500 (P)(100 vcaps) $22 - In one clinical trial, vitamin C reduced uric
acid by as much as 1.5mg/dL on average in individuals who had abnormally high uric
acid levels. Vitamin C appears to work by increasing the rate at which the kidneys filer
uric acid into the urine and by preventing its reabsorption as it moves through the
kidneys. Cautions / Interactions: Doses of >2000 mg of Vitamin C per day may cause GI disturbances in sensitive individuals and may not be advisable for some people. Vitamin C may interact with oral estrogen medications, HMG CoA inhibitors, and blood thinning medications. Consult your healthcare practitioner if you take any prescription medications before exceeding the recommended dosage for this product.
*Black Cherry Fruit 750mg (NW)(90 caps) $19.99, (180 caps) $37.99- Cherry
extract contains anthocyanins (anti-inflammatory compounds that may reduce gout
attacks). When buying cherry extract, always look for anthocyanin content of 100mg
per 500mg pill, or at least 20%. Cautions: If you are pregnant/lactating, consult your healthcare practitioner before using this product.
Adjust your diet-avoid foods high in purine &
eating 20 bing cherries a day can lower your purine level.
Graves' Disease
*Selenium 200mcg (P)(90 vcaps) $11 - The thyroid has the highest concentration
of selenium per gram of tissue of any organ, and the mineral helps contribute to normal
thyroid function in many ways. Cautions / Interactions: Intakes of selenium less than 900 micrograms daily (for adults) are unlikely to cause adverse reactions. Do not exceed one capsule daily, except under the guidance of a health care practitioner. Persons living in areas of high soil selenium, such as the Dakotas, should consult a physician prior to use.
Hair Loss
*Saw palmetto extract DS 160mg (NW)(60 softgels) $10.99 - Saw palmetto
supplements contain fatty acids. Researchers have concluded that these fatty acids have
the ability to partially block the enzyme 5-alpha-reductase that contributes to hair loss.
Cautions: If you are pregnant/lactating, consult your healthcare practitioner before using this product.
*Iron 36mg (P)(90 vcaps) $15
OR HemoPlex 29mg (NA)(60 caplets) $21- Doctors often test for iron
deficiency in women who complain of hair loss. Warning: Use only as directed by your doctor. Having your Iron level checked is required. Cautions / Interactions: For adults only. Do not exceed recommended dosage unless directed by your healthcare practitioner. Some medications, such as some antibiotics and bisphosphonates, may interfere with iron absorption. Iron supplements may interact with L-Dopa and thyroid medications. Take medications at least 2 hours before or 2 hours after iron-containing supplements. Consult your healthcare practitioner if pregnant/nursing, taking medication, or have a medical condition (especially those related to iron storage). Keep out of reach of children. WARNING: Accidental overdose of iron-containing products is a leading cause of fatal poisoning in children under 6. Keep this product out of reach of children. In case of accidental overdose, call a doctor or poison control center immediately.
(For women only AND as directed by your doctor.
Requires having your Iron level checked.)
Hashimoto's Thyroiditis (Hypothyroidism)
*Selenium 200mcg (P)(90 vcaps) $11 - New evidence suggests selenium (200mcg of
selenomethionine), which plays a role in immune and thyroid function, may reduce
thyroid antibody levels and the dosage of thyroid hormone replacement needed.
Headaches (Tension)
*5-HTP 100 (P)(90 vcaps) $35 - It is thought that by increasing levels of 5-HTP,
a precursor of serotonin, you increase levels of serotonin, which improves mood and
may activate intrinsic pain-relieving systems in the body. Cautions / Interactions:
5-HTP should be used with caution in combination with any serotonergic drug or herb, including antidepressants and St. John‘s Wort. If you take any of these medications, consult your healthcare practitioner prior to using this product. Individuals with a history of cardiac conditions, use only under the direction of your healthcare practitioner. Not recommended for pregnant or lactating women.
*Magnesium citrate 400mg (P)(100 tabs) $14 - This mineral has some data to
support its use for tension headaches, probably due to its ability to relax muscles. There
is evidence that this mineral may also help prevent migraines and help relieve pain in
adults. Cautions / Interactions: Large doses of oral magnesium may have a laxative effect. Magnesium can interact with some antibiotics, diuretics, bisphosphonates, and muscle relaxants. In addition, many medications can affect magnesium absorption and excretion. If you are taking prescription medications, consult your healthcare practitioner before using this product.
(I have seen Chiropractic adjustments help many patients with this type of headache).
Hearing Loss
(People with vitamin B12 deficiency show a greater degree of noice-induced hearing loss).
(Vitamin E from whole foods may prevent hearing loss, but further reaseach is needed).
*Alpha-lipoic acid (ALA) 250mg (P)(90 vcaps) $30
OR *Alpha-lipoic acid (ALA) Plus 600mg (P)(60 vcaps) $36- ALA has been
shown to protect against both age-related hearing loss and chemotherapy-induced
hearing loss. A preliminary study showed ALA daily could protect the inner ear from
trauma. It also protects nerves from damage in people with diabetes. Just be warned: It can cause a harmless malodorous urine smell and increase the risk of rash and itching, and it can also increase insulin levels and drastically drop blood sugar levels in very rare cases. Cautions / Interactions: Blood hormone levels and thyroid function tests should be monitored closely in people taking thyroid hormones who are also taking alpha-lipoic acid. Also, because it may affect insulin sensitivity, blood glucose levels should be monitored closely when alpha-lipoic acid supplementation is added to diabetes treatment regimens. In addition, alpha-lipoic acid supplementation may increase the requirement for biotin in humans. Alpha-lipoic acid may affect the body‘s metabolism of certain medications, including Cisplatin and Cyclophosphamide.
*NAC (N-acetylcysteine) (P)(120 tabs)$30 -There is some preliminary research data showing that NAC can prevent ear trauma due to noise. Cautions / Interactions: NAC may interact with nitroglycerin. Consult your healthcare practitioner before taking this product if you are taking nitroglycerin.
*Magnesium citrate 400mg (P)(100 tabs) $14 - Studies are ongoing with
magnesium supplements to determine if this mineral could improve hearing loss.
*CoQ10 100 (Qunol)(120 softgels) $32 -May prevent hearing loss, but further research is needed. Cautions / Interactions: CoQ10 may reduce the anticoagulant effect of warfarin. In addition, CoQ10 may increase the effectiveness of certain blood pressure medication, including diltiazem, metoprolol, enalapril, and nitrate. Statin medications have been shown to decrease CoQ10 levels in the body and CoQ10 supplementation may be beneficial when taking these drugs.
Herpes Virus
(Cold Sore, Shingles)
There is a correlation between Lysine and Arginine in Herpes outbreaks. The general rule is reduce the amount of Arginie in your diet and increase the amount of Lysine. Lysine supplementation is also recommended.
Beans, brewer's yeast, mung bean sprouts, most fruits and vegetables (except for peas), fish, chicken, beef, lamb, milk and cheese all have more lysine than arginine.
Gelatin, chocolate, carob, coconut, oats, wholewheat and, white flour, peanuts, soybeans, and wheatgerm have more arginine than lysine. Supplementing your diet with L-Lysine helps to assure that you tilt the scales toward the lysine side, helping to prevent outbreaks.
*L-Lysine 500 mg (NW)(250 tabs) $15.99 - L-Lysine is an essential amino acid, which means that it cannot be manufactured by the body and must be obtained through the diet or by supplementation. Lysine is necessary for the production of all protein in the body including hormones, enzymes, and antibodies, as well as carnitine and collagen, which is the structural protein forming all connective tissue such as skin, tendon, and bone. L-Lysine also plays a major role in calcium absorption. Some evidence suggests that L-Lysine supplementation may help to support a healthy
immunesystem as well as proper cardiovascular function. Caution: More than 10 Gms daily may cause abdominal cramps and diarrhea.
Hemorrhoids
*Ultimate Fiber (PB)(120 cvaps) $27 - Fiber promotes soft, bulky stools that can be passed without straining, which is critical for reducing pain, bleeding, and healing time. It's also important to increase your water intake to make the fiber work more effectively. (both soluble & insoluble)- (Soluble Fiber)- Soluble fibers attract water and form a gel, which slows digestion. Soluble fiber delays the emptying of your stomach and makes you feel full, which helps control weight. Slower stomach emptying may reduce blood sugar spikes, lower blood sugar levels and have a beneficial effect on insulin sensitivity, which may help control diabetes. Soluble fiber can also help lower LDL ("bad") blood cholesterol by interfering with the absorption of dietary cholesterol. Note: Getting 20-30 Gms of fiber (10-15 Gms of soluble and 10-15 Gms of insoluble) per day from diet and supplements (recommending not more than half from supplements) could improve both heart and colon health. (Insoluble Fiber) -Insoluble fibers are considered gut-healthy fiber because they have a laxative effect and add bulk to the diet, helping prevent constipation. These fibers do not dissolve in water, so they pass through the GI tract relatively intact, and speed up the passage of food and waste trough your gut. This gut cleaning process is one of the mechanism that reduces the risk of colon polyps and colon cancer. Cautions: If you are pregnant/lactating, consult your healthcare practitioner before using this product.
*Psyllium Husk 700mg Capsules (NW)(180 ct) $16.99
OR *Psyllium Husk Powder (NW)(12 oz) $11.99 - Fiber promotes soft, bulky stools that can be passed without straining, which is critical for reducing pain, bleeding, and healing time. It's also important to increase your water intake to make the fiber work more effectively. (Soluble Fiber)- Soluble fibers attract water and form a gel, which slows digestion. Cautions: If you are pregnant/lactating, consult your healthcare practitioner before using this product.
*Pycnogenol 60mg (NW)(50 vcaps) $43.99 - Pycnogenol contains polyphenols,
especially proanthocyanidins (PCO's), which appear to be the active ingredient with
protective properties. Cautions: Consult your healthcare practitioner before using this
product.
*Horse Chestnut 300mg (NW)(90 vcaps) $14.99 - Horse chestnut has been shown
to reduce leg pain, swelling, and itching and ankle & calf swelling as well as the use of
compression stockings. The active compound in horse chestnut is escin, which has been
shown to block the destruction of structural components in vein walls. Cautions: If you are pregnant/lactating, consult your healthcare practitioner before using this product.
Hepatitis C and B & Alcoholic Liver Disease
(Mild disease and recent liver injury only)
*Milk thistle Extract (P)(90 vcaps) $25- Some studies have shown milk thistle might
benefit people with liver problems or liver damage, but others haven't.
Cautions / Interactions: Few side effects are reported when Silymarin is used within the recommended dose ranges. Rare cases of stomach upset, mild laxative effect, itching and headache have been described. Significant interactions between milk thistle (Silymarin) and medications or other herbal remedies are largely unknown at normal levels of intake.
*Soy Protein Isolate (NW)(1.2 lbs) $17.99, (2 lbs) $29.99 - Soy protein has been
has been shown to decrease the liver enzyme ALT in hepatitis C patients. Abnormally
high ALT levels suggest liver injury is occurring. Experts believe soy protein may
improve liver function and reduce inflammation. Cautions: If you are
pregnant/lactating, consult your healthcare practitioner before using this product.
High Cholesterol
*Lipidyne (NA)(90 caps) $30
OR Red yeast rice (P)(90 vcaps) $25 OR *RYR Plus (P)(90 vcaps) $39 -
Red yeast rice inhibits cholesterol synthesis in the liver. There have been more than
100 clinical trials with red yeast rice, and many cardiologists now routinely recommend
it for people who cannot tolerate statins.
Cautions / Interactions: Do not use Red yeast rice if you are pregnant, may become pregnant, or are breast feeding, because using this product may harm the fetus.
RYR Plus Caution: Individuals with liver disease or those currently taking statins or other
medications should consult with a health practitioner prior to use.
*Psyllium Husk 700mg Capsules (NW)(180 ct) $16.99
OR *Psyllium Husk Powder (NW)(12 oz) $11.99 (Soluble Fiber) - Soluble
(viscous) fiber lowers LDL cholesterol in many ways. It can prevent bile salts from being
reabsorbed, it keeps sugar from being rapidly absorbed, and it is a prebiotic. Soluble
fiber supplements, primarily psyllium powder have been studied the most in clinical
trials, and they can lower LDL as much as a low-dose cholesterol drug. Cautions: If you are pregnant/lactating, consult your healthcare practitioner before using this product.
Choose foods with both soluble & insoluble fiber.
*Proto-Sitosterol Plant Sterol Esters (P)(90 softgels) $25 - Phytosterols block the
uptake of cholesterol from food and bile sources in the intestinal tract. They reduce
LDL's, but don't really impact HDL's and triglycerides. Cautions / Interactions:
Orally, Beta-Sitosterol is usually well tolerated. In some individuals, it can cause minor GIupset. Taking Beta-Sitosterol can exacerbate sitosterolemia,a rare inherited lipid storage disease. Plant Sterols may interact with Zetia (ezetimibe) and statin medications. If you are taking these or other prescription medications, or if you have other health conditions, consult your healthcare practitioner before using this product.
High Triglycerides (also low HDL)
*CardiOmega (NA)(120 caps) $47- Fish oil is FDA-approved to lower
high triglycerides (500 or higher) at dosages of 1,000 to 4,000 mg per day. Cautions / Interactions: Omega-3 fatty acids may interact with aspirin or warfarin. In addition, Omega-3 fatty may interact with cholesterol lowering statin medications and antihypertensives.
*Astaxanthin (Antioxidant)(P)(60 Softgels) $40- Astaxanthin is a member of the carotenoid family derived from Non-GMO Haematococcus pluvialis microalgae. Due to its unique chemical structure, Astaxanthin can stabilize cellular and mitochondrial membrane structures and thus protect them against free radical attack originating both inside and outside of the cell. Astaxanthin is an extremely powerful (6,000 x more then vitamin C) antioxidant found in microalgae that has been shown to increase HDL's (good cholesterol) & lower triglycerides .
HIV/Aids
*Whey Protein Isolate (with 3-5Gm Leucine) Pure (P)(2 Lbs) $49 - A well-done
study from the University of Southern California Keck School of Medicine found that
taking 40mg of whey protein powder daily significantly improved CD4 cell counts (an
important marker of immune status) in HIV patients. Cautions / Interactions: Whey Protein Isolate may affect the absorption of some antibiotics and other medications. If you are taking any medications or if you have allergies to dairy products, consult your healthcare practitioner prior to use.
(Weight Resistance Training)
Hot Flashes
*St. John's wort (NW)(100 vcaps) $12.99, (250 vcaps) $25.99 - In studies,

The natural K2 menaquinone-7 form used in Dyna D3 w/K2 is the most bioavailable, longest lasting and bioactive form of vitamin K supplements. Caution: Use D3 without K2 if you take blood thinners such as heparin or Coumadin / warfarin.
Inflammatory Diseases
Inflammation is in some way associated with most disease and death.
Inflammatory Diseases-Inflammation is the body's protective response to injury and infection; it is a complex process involving many cell types, as well as different components of blood. It is believed that Obesity is responsible for 25%, and when coupled with Inactivity 33%, of Inflammatory Diseases. See current research at www.tpims.org
Heart Disease (see Top 10 leading causes of death in the USA)
Alzheimer's (see Top 10 leading causes of death in the USA) (see Alzheimer's)
Multiple Sclerosis (see Multiple Sclerosis)
Rheumatoid Arthritis (see Rheumatoid Arthritis)
Pain Management- The cost of chronic pain in the US exceeds $70 billion annually, with direct costs for pain associated with diabetes alone exceeding $10 billion.
(see Chronic Prostatitis/Chronic Pelvic Pain Syndrome, Complex Regional Pain Syndrome, Diabetes, Diabetic Neuropathy, Fibromyalgia, Insulin Resistance, Interstitial Cystitis, Migraine, Osteoarthritis and Joint Pain, Peripheral Neuropathy, Rheumatoid Arthritis, Sickle Cell Anemia, Statin-Induced Myalgia and Trigeminal Neuralgia).
Obesity-More than 60% of American adults are now overweight or obese, and the prevalence of obesity is increasing in both adults and children. The American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) states "OBESITY is quickly overtaking TOBACCO as the leading preventable cause of cancer." Obesity is often accompanied by life-threatening complications, including type II diabetes, heart disease, and cancer. These complications are referred to as the “metabolic syndrome”, and pose a major challenge to public health. Obesity is a risk factor for the development of breast cancer, and disease prognosis is worsened if the patient is obese at the time of diagnosis.
